What is punchout?

Punchout is a way for a buyer to shop on a supplier’s website from inside their own procurement system. The buyer clicks out, builds a cart, and the cart is returned to their system as a requisition for approval.

Punchout exists because large buyers do not want their staff shopping on supplier websites with a company credit card. The procurement system holds the budget, the approval chain and the purchase order. Punchout lets the buyer use the supplier’s own catalogue and search while keeping all of that where it belongs.

Mechanically, the buyer’s system posts a request to the supplier, the supplier returns a session URL, the buyer lands on a version of the storefront that knows who they are and what their contract prices are, they build a cart, and the cart is posted back as a requisition rather than becoming an order. cXML is the common standard, used by Ariba and Coupa. OCI is the SAP equivalent and stops at the cart handover.

Two things to know before you scope it. Punchout is usually one large customer’s requirement rather than a general need, so the honest question is what share of revenue depends on it. And it is rarely native: expect either an app with a subscription or a build, and expect the contract prices and the catalogue entitlement to be the hard part rather than the protocol.

Why it decides a platform

Punchout is frequently a hard requirement from a single large customer, and it is rarely native. Finding out which platforms support it and at what cost changes the shortlist.

Also called: cXML punchout, OCI punchout, punchout catalog.
