What is headless commerce?

Headless commerce means the storefront a customer sees is a separate application talking to the commerce platform through APIs, instead of using the platform’s built-in templates. The platform still runs the cart, the pricing and the orders.

The appeal is control. A headless front end can look and behave however you want, render fast, and serve several audiences from one back end. The cost is that everything the platform gave you for free, including product pages, cart, checkout flow, SEO defaults and admin previews, now has to be built and then maintained by whoever built it.

For B2B specifically, headless is sometimes offered as the answer to what is really an account model problem. If the platform cannot represent your customers properly, a custom front end will not fix it, because the account model lives in the back end. Headless solves presentation problems, not data model problems.

It also changes who you can hire. A templated storefront can be edited by a marketer with a little help. A headless storefront needs a front-end developer for changes that used to take an afternoon. That is a fine trade for a team that already has developers and a poor one for a team that does not.

Why it decides a platform

Headless is a front-end decision that often gets sold as a platform decision. If the requirement driving it is about pricing, entitlement or ERP data, headless will not address it and adds cost on top.

Also called: headless, headless architecture, headless ecommerce, API-first storefront.
