What is dealer portal?

A dealer portal is a logged-in site for a manufacturer’s dealers or distributors, showing their own pricing, stock, order history and often marketing material and warranty claims. It is a channel tool rather than a public storefront.

Manufacturers who sell through a dealer network rarely want a public price on the page. What they want is for each dealer to see their own terms, place orders without phoning an inside sales rep, and pull the documents they keep asking for.

That makes a dealer portal narrower than a general storefront in some ways and wider in others. There is no consumer acquisition problem, no guest checkout, and often no public catalogue at all. There is instead a hard requirement that entitlement and pricing are correct for every account, because a dealer who sees another dealer’s price is a commercial incident.

Most dealer portals also carry things a commerce platform does not have: warranty registration, claim submission, lead registration, co-op marketing assets. Those either come from another system or get built, and they are usually what pushes the project past what a native connector can deliver on its own.

Why it decides a platform

Dealer portals fail on entitlement and on the non-commerce features around the edges, not on the cart. Scoping one as a storefront project is the usual reason it runs over.

Also called: distributor portal, reseller portal, partner portal, dealer site.
