What is CPQ?

CPQ stands for configure, price, quote. It is software that walks a seller or a buyer through valid product configurations, works out the price, and produces a quote document.

CPQ exists because some products cannot be priced from a table. A pump with 14 options, a run of custom packaging, a system quoted with installation and freight: the price is a calculation over the configuration, and the rules behind it are often in a spreadsheet on one person’s laptop.

CPQ can sit in several places. Some ERPs have it, CRMs such as Salesforce have it, standalone products exist, and some commerce platforms approximate it with option rules. Where it sits decides who can quote. If CPQ lives in the CRM, the storefront can display a quote but cannot generate one, and self-service configuration is off the table without another integration.

Before buying CPQ, check how much of the quoting volume genuinely needs it. Sellers often find that a minority of quotes carry real configuration complexity and the rest are ordinary products at negotiated prices, which the commerce platform can handle on its own.

Why it decides a platform

CPQ is the most commonly over-bought item on a B2B commerce project. It is also the one thing that cannot be faked when the products really are configured, so scoping it early changes the budget materially.

Also called: configure price quote, configure-price-quote, CPQ software, quoting engine.
